The sixties hold great visions of liberty, free will, free love and being able to love and to experience life to its fullest. Across the Universe must have been filmed by a Beatles fanatic. Filmed by someone who loved Beatles so much that the characters in the movie are named after the characters in the Beatles songs as well as centering the storyline around the Beatles music!
The entire movie cum musical looks like a prolonged MTV – in a good way. Do not be shock when the characters burst out singing their heart out, expressing their deepest emotions, be it love, fear, hate or anger. The artistic value of this film stands out for its wild imagination giving creativity free reign.
I must admit I do not particularly feel much for Beatles even though they are still popular to this day. However, I must reiterate that I enjoyed this MTV immensely for its unconventionality, heart-tugging storyline, unbridled creativity and the lovely actors and actresses who could all hold their own and belt out the numerous songs in the film.
The consequences of teenage passion and angst are aptly showcased in the film. The leads get involved in the fruitless revolution, they fall in love despite all odds, they leave home for America, the land where dreams come true. They experience the emotional roller coasters of life, fall madly in love, declare forever love and then fall out of love, pursue their passion despite not knowing what to expect next, they dare to defy tradition and live in their own terms and take the consequences of their decisions.
Indeed they epitomizes the passion of being so young, so carefree. What is life, if we do not dare to live it?
