A Dream House Nightmare (NERO BIFAMILIARE = Two-Family Noir)

A Dream that becomes a Nightmare

RATING NC16 (Some Nudity)
DIRECTOR Federico Zampaglione

What would you do if the dream house you worked so hard for becomes your nightmare? You have worked hard, saved hard and even cheated a little to make payment for dream of your choice, or at least, your wife’s choice. But when your neighbor is less than ideal, what can you do about it?

It started with cold, steely stares from the confines of your neighbour’s windows. Then it proceeded cries of ecstasy when you are entertaining your friends at home. Bringing their passion for each other out to the garden where they caress in the open, oblivious to your awkwardness and displeasure. And it became too much to bear when your neighbor started using your electricity via a cord that goes through your home, at your expense. But so what? They appear too fierce and unapproachable for you to do anything!

You later learn that your new neighbours are of dubious characters and eke out a living in the worst of ways from the ever helpful butler. Horrors of horrors! But did you seriously really believe, for a moment, that Serene Villa is going to be a place of serenity before you bought it? Fat hope is all I can say.

However, this was not the end to their troubles. When their vacation was cut short abruptly with news of a break-in to their dream home, they rushed back to realize that all their dreams were rudely disrupted and destroyed. All their furnishings and everything of value were taken away from them in a blink of an eye. But the worst was yet to come, the couple’s most salacious, intimate and private photos were also stolen and gasp!, duplicated and distributed to their neighbours at Serene Villa, making it no longer serene.

Overcomed with anger and helplessness, the husband began to pinpoint their neighbor for their escalating troubles because of a trivial quarrel. Soon, paranoia and obsession overcame him and he began to focus all his energy and attention on the neighbour instead of focusing on rebuilding their lives with his beautiful wife.

Whatever money left was spent on purchasing expensive spying equipment as the husband was convinced that their troubles will be solved if he manage to find some evidence of the cursed neighbour. It became so bad that he even stole into the neighbour’s vehicle causing it to destroy the peaceful neighbourhood’s peacefulness, thereby costing him even more. This was more than a double whammy when he was fired from work.

Matters became so bad that the husband was no longer the loving husband causing his wife to leave him. He had only one thought in his mind – to get rid of his neighbour. And that was what he did by hiring a profession killer to do the deed on him.

An exciting plot isn’t it? There’s more to come.

Just when the killer was to get into action, they realized that the burglars were not their neighbours but someone else. And just when the puzzles fall into place, their neighbours shifted and left behind their radio as an act of friendship. All’s well that ends well. This little piece of satire is superb not only because of the plot twists, the social commentary that the world owes you a living because things do not turn out well for you is something that resonates greatly to me.

How many times have we felt that something or someone owes us a living because we are underpaid, overworked and basically, given the short end of the stick? Having this imbalanced way of thinking only serves to thwart our minds like it did the husband. He made sure he got back at his company by doing personal things during working hours, using his company facilities for his personal usage, feigning illness and even cheating on his insurance. Aren’t we all guilty of this? Haven’t we all tried similar tricks at least once in our lives?

What adds a dash of spice to the dish is the way the new neighbours perceive the couple. Just as they had doubts and disdain for their new neighbours then, so did their new neighbours had towards them. Though the couple has adapted to living in Serene Villa and enjoying every moment at home, they received the same treatment they gave their neighbours – viewing others with disdain and suspicion, based on unreliable hearsay.

Isn’t this what living in society is all about? The space between people just keeps growing with the advancement in technology that greatly diminishes the need for people to interact face-to-face with one another. In turn, this breeds a sense of unfamiliarity and ultimately distrust towards someone who may be more like you than you initially thought so.
