Creating Your Own Style
Forming your own style is a matter of keeping your eyes and ears open and through trial and error. As with a decent wardrobe, style is something that may take years to accumulate. Here are a few basic tips everyone should bear in mind when deciding what to wear for the day. One does not need to dress in an over-the-top manner to look good and to attract admiring glances. Style is a matter of taste, it is a well-put together kind of feel that comes with knowing yourself well. Go ahead, explore different styles, don’t be afraid to make mistakes and you will eventually emerge with your very own style. Most importantly, have fun!
1. Place a flower brooch to plain hats.
2. Wear coloured tights whose colour appears as a hint on the dress that you are wearing.
3. A brooch/flower/scarf/belt/pendant/bracelet will instantly dress up a plain outfit/dress.
4. Singapore’s ubiquitous aircon blasts in all buildings are the perfect excuse to do layering. Wear a vest, cardigan, jacket, shawl, scarf.
5. Take note of compliments and what colours bring out the best in you. Steer clear of unflattering colours!
6. Wear only clothes that flatter you and those that you are comfortable in.
7. No matter your attire, ensure that it does not reveal too much of yourself that you are not willing to reveal. Eg. A plunging cleavage when you bend down, a hemline that is too short which prevents you from lifting your arms.
8. Do not carry bags with busy patterns that clashes with the patterns on your outfit. Rule of thumb: Wear a plain (no prints) outfit with a handbag of busy design and vice versa.
9. As with eyebrows on your face, your hair will alter your entire look. Discover the styles & colours that flatter your features and one that you feel comfortable in!
10. With the proliferation of digital cameras, it should not be difficult to take a full-length photo of yourself in the mirror everyday and study how the outfit work or do not work for you. Keep your ears peeled for compliments or criticism, evaluate and remember them!
11. Keep your eyes open to current styles, browse local and foreign mags and over the internet. Feel free to people-watch to form your own opinion of style.
