Wedding Daze

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Starring Jason Biggs, Isla Fisher
Written and Directed by Michael Ian Black
Run Time: 90 minutes

Director in a Daze
Having just caught Isla Fisher in Definitely, Maybe on DVD, I was hoping to see more of her and half expecting her to thrill me. She was definitely very likable in Definitely, and very likable in Wedding Daze. However, this film less than excites me.

A group of very good actors are brought together for this mad cap rom-com or so I thought but the veterans are wasted on a ill-written storyline. There is a gem in the synopsis and trailers. But because of the slipshod manner in handling the very important turning points in the film, Wedding Daze has gone directly to the trash rom-com category.

Who says you can’t marry a stranger and live happily ever after? I believe it’s possible and so did Wedding Daze. Jason Biggs character lives day-to-day after his very daring marriage proposal shocked his wife-to-be to death! What a proposition! His love for her was too great for him to cast his eyes on another woman, only to have him propose marriage to a random stranger, a waitress at a restaurant and have her accept!

The young couple, with their own baggages, actually try to live together as they commence their wedding! They fumble to discover each other and find out what they want for themselves and of course, find it in each other. All this is fine but the way the director pans out the action, the sudden declaration of love for each other, the irrelevant acts of the Biggs’ characters kinky and very avant-garde parents did not appear to gel with the rest of the film.

My main complain with this film is that it can’t decide whether it wants to be all-out slapstick, like American Pie or all our lovey-dovey like so many successful rom-coms out there. And this, I feel, is the failing of the movie, barely salvaged by the cast.

I can’t believe with the proliferation of enjoyable and successful rom-coms nowadays, this type of film actually makes it to the big screen! I would like this is more appropriate for a straight-to-video category!
